Most homeowners know about their hot water system, but many have never heard of a tempering valve.

While it's a relatively small component, a tempering valve plays an important role in the safety and performance of your home's hot water system. If it stops working properly, you may notice water that's too hot, not hot enough, or temperatures that constantly fluctuate.

What is a tempering valve?

A tempering valve is a device that mixes hot water from your hot water system with cold water before it reaches your taps.

Its job is to reduce the water temperature to a safer level for everyday use around the home.

Without a tempering valve, water coming directly from a hot water system can be hot enough to cause burns or scalding injuries.

Why are tempering valves important?

Tempering valves help protect households by delivering hot water at a safer and more consistent temperature.

They are particularly important for:

  • Families with young children

  • Elderly residents

  • People with reduced mobility

  • Homes where hot water temperatures can fluctuate

By regulating the temperature of the water supplied to taps, showers and basins, tempering valves help reduce the risk of accidental scalding.

Signs your tempering valve may be failing

Like any plumbing component, tempering valves can wear out over time.

Some common signs include:

1. Water is too hot

If your hot water suddenly feels much hotter than normal, the tempering valve may not be mixing cold water correctly.

2. Water temperature constantly changes

If your shower alternates between hot and cold, a faulty tempering valve could be contributing to the problem.

3. Reduced hot water flow

A worn or partially blocked valve can sometimes restrict water flow throughout the home.

4. The valve is leaking

Visible leaks around the tempering valve should be investigated promptly to prevent further issues.

5. The valve has become seized

Over time, mineral build-up, corrosion and general wear can cause tempering valves to seize and stop operating correctly.

How long do tempering valves last?

The lifespan of a tempering valve can vary depending on water quality, usage and maintenance.

Like many plumbing components, they can gradually wear out over time and may eventually require replacement to ensure safe and reliable operation.

Regular inspections can help identify problems before they lead to more significant issues.

Can a tempering valve be repaired?

In some situations, repairs may be possible. However, if a valve is seized, heavily worn or no longer functioning correctly, replacement is often the most practical and reliable solution.

A licensed plumber can inspect the valve and advise whether repair or replacement is the best option.
