Hot water is something most of us take for granted until it's suddenly gone. While some hot water system problems can be repaired, others are a sign that replacement may be the more reliable and cost-effective option.
Here are seven common signs that your hot water system may be nearing the end of its life.
1. Your hot water is running out faster than usual
If your household hasn't changed but you're finding hot water runs out more quickly than it used to, the system may be losing efficiency. Sediment buildup inside storage tanks can reduce capacity and affect performance.
2. Water temperature is inconsistent
Does your shower suddenly switch between hot and cold? Inconsistent water temperatures can indicate issues with heating elements, thermostats or internal components.
3. Rust-coloured water
If you notice rusty or discoloured water coming from your hot water taps, it may be a sign of corrosion inside the tank or pipework. This should be investigated promptly to prevent further damage.
4. Leaks around the system
Any water pooling around your hot water unit should be taken seriously. Small leaks can quickly become larger failures that may result in water damage and an unexpected loss of hot water.
5. Strange noises
Popping, rumbling or banging noises are often caused by sediment accumulating inside the tank. As the system works harder to heat water through this buildup, efficiency can decrease and wear can increase.
6. Rising energy bills
Older hot water systems generally become less efficient over time. If your energy bills are increasing without a clear explanation, your hot water system may be contributing to the extra cost.
7. The system is more than 10–15 years old
While some units last longer, many hot water systems begin experiencing reliability issues as they age. If your system is over 10 years old and showing signs of trouble, replacement may be worth considering before a complete breakdown occurs.
Repair or replace?
Not every hot water issue requires a new system. In many cases, a repair can restore reliable operation. However, when repairs become frequent or the unit is approaching the end of its service life, replacement can provide greater efficiency, reliability and peace of mind.
